Chalk it up to plastic surgery, weight loss or weight gain, different makeup and hair, or simply the aging process, but some celebrities look so different than they used to that they’re almost unrecognizable. While some stars have talked openly over the years about their physical transformations, others have kept mum, leaving us to only speculate why their appearances may have changed.
What do you think — do these stars look better or worse than they did previously?
Meg Ryan Then
Back in 2003, actress Meg Ryan was still sporting her signature loose blonde curls. At 42 years old, she had just made a significant career move, departing from her usual rom-com roles to appear in the edgy thriller “In The Cut.” Looking back at that time, she remarked in an interview that it was a “real turning point” for her career.
Meg Ryan Now
Now 57 years old, both Meg Ryan’s career and looks have changed. Taking a hiatus from acting, Ryan has only appeared in a handful of TV and film projects in the last decade, including 2015’s “Ithaca,” a film she directed. Fans have commented that her face looks different in recent years with some noting that it seems “tighter” than it used to.
Kylie Jenner Then
TV personality Kylie Jenner was a fresh-faced 12-year-old who had just begun experimenting with makeup when she posed for this photo in 2009. Her family’s reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” had premiered two years before. And as the youngest Kardashian member, Jenner was not a yet a household name.
Kylie Jenner Now
Fast-forward to 2018. Kylie Jenner is now a billionaire and beauty mogul, having started her own cosmetics company in 2015. However, her bank account is not the only dramatic change in her life. She regularly switches up her hair color and has admitted to using lip fillers to puff up her pout.
Heidi Montag Then
In 2006, the reality show “The Hills” first aired on MTV, thrusting its young cast, including Heidi Montag, into the spotlight. A year later, Montag would undergo plastic surgery. However, the biggest changes to her appearance were still yet to come.
Heidi Montag Now
To say that Heidi Montag has had a lot of plastic surgery might be an understatement. At 23, she revealed that she had undergone ten different procedures in a single day, from breast enlargement to a chin reduction.
Now 32 years old and making a return to TV on MTV’s “The Hills: New Beginnings,” she told Cosmopolitan that she wished she had waited until she was older to undergo cosmetic surgery.
“I was way too young to make such a life-changing decision and was under so much pressure because it was the beginning of comment sections and negativity and hate on the internet,” she said.
Jonah Hill Then
When actor Jonah Hill appeared in the 2007 film “Knocked Up,” the then-24 year old sported big curly hair and an unkempt facial hair, fitting for his character as a slacker. However, as Hill’s career changed and he went on to star in films like “Moneyball” and “21 Jump Street,” so did his appearance.
Jonah Hill Now
Nowadays, Jonah Hill looks like an entirely different man. He has slimmed down and now wears his hair relatively short. And while he’s still a fan of facial hair, his beard is far more groomed, giving him a more polished look.
Lara Flynn Boyle Then
“The Practice” star Lara Flynn Boyle made headlines when she wore a pale pink tutu-inspired dress to the 2003 Golden Globes. A year earlier, she told an interviewer: “On a vanity level, I am not looking forward to aging at all — I think I look pretty good now.”
Lara Flynn Boyle Now
Since then, Lara Flynn Boyle, now 49, has seemingly retired from Hollywood. Her last film credit was the 2015 film “Lucky Dog.” When she has made public appearances, fans have commented that she looks quite different.
Prince William Then
Prince William was considered a heartthrob in his younger days. He even appeared on the cover of teen magazines like YM and Teen People. In fact, it was reported that his future wife Kate Middleton had kept a poster of Prince William on her wall years before she ever met him at the University of St. Andrews.
Prince William Now
Now a father of three, 37-year-old Prince William is no longer the heartthrob he once was. Instead, in more recent years, he’s been described as an “adorably nerdy dad.” His once longer blonde hair is now much thinner and cropped short.
Khloe Kardashian Then
When “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” premiered in 2007, Khloe Kardashian was surprised to find that online critics labeled her as the “fat sister” on the show.
“I didn’t think I was the fat sister until people would call me that. And I was like, ‘Am I?’ Like I just didn’t really think of myself as being fat,” she told E! News years later.
Khloe Kardashian Now
In the 16 seasons that “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” has been on the air, Khloe Kardashian has undergone a major physical transformation. She’s lost weight and even launched a reality show to help other people obtain a “revenge body.” She’s also ditched her naturally dark hair for lighter colors.

In 2005, Mindy Kaling’s career was starting to take off. She became a writer and actor on “The Office” and had a small role in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” When she showed up at the movie’s premiere, she sported dark curly hair, hoop earrings, and a chunky necklace.
Mindy Kaling Now
Since then, Mindy Kaling has transformed herself from character actor to major star. She created her own TV series and wrote and starred in the film “Late Night.” Beauty-wise, she’s also changed up her look, lightening and straightening her hair and sporting designer jewelry and clothing on the red carpet.
Chris Pratt Then
Before finding success as a leading man, Chris Pratt was mostly known as the goofy character Andy on “Parks and Recreation.” His weight also fluctuated dramatically.
“I’d gone back and forth, lost weight for ‘Moneyball,’ got fat again, then trimmed down for ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ then gained it all back again for Andy,” he said in an interview with Men’s Health U.K.
Chris Pratt Now
At the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards, Chris Pratt looked like an entirely new man. For the 2014 film “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Pratt slimmed down, and, as a result, more leading man roles came his way.
“A huge part of how my career has shifted is based on the way that I look, on the way that I’ve shaped my body to look,” Pratt said to BBC Radio 4’s “Front Row.”
Courteney Cox Then
In the ’90s, Courteney Cox was at the height of her career. She was a cast member on one of the most successful sitcoms of the decade, “Friends,” and starred in the “Scream” movie franchise. She was 40 years old by the time “Friends” ended in 2004.
Courteney Cox Now
It’s no secret that a post-“Friends” Courteney Cox dabbled in plastic surgery as she got older. However, after realizing that she went overboard with fillers, Cox has now scaled it back.
In 2017, the then-53 year old told New Beauty: “I’ve had all my fillers dissolved. I’m as natural as I can be. I feel better because I look like myself. I think that I now look more like the person that I was. I hope I do. Things are going to change. Everything’s going to drop. I was trying to make it not drop, but that made me look fake.”
Taylor Swift Then
As a young country singer in Nashville, Taylor Swift’s appearance was dominated by big, curly, blond ringlets. She released her first album “Taylor Swift” in 2006, and her first single “Tim McGraw” became a top 10 hit. For the 2006 Academy of Country Music Awards, the singer donned cowboy boots. Also that year, for the CMAs in Nashville, she wore a stunning black gown.
Taylor Swift Now
By 2014, Taylor Swift had ditched the yellow-blond hair for a darker color and country music for catchy pop tunes like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “Shake It Off.” Her fashion choices also became edgier and more grown up.
“Going through different phases is one of my favorite things about fashion. I love how it can mark the passage of time,” she told Vogue in 2016. Here she is at the 2018 American Music Awards.
Jared Leto Then
At the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards, Jared Leto looked fresh-faced with short hair and a clean-shaven face. At the time, his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, had just released their second album, and Leto was also juggling roles in movies like “Panic Room,” “Lord of War,” and “Chapter 27.”
Jared Leto Now
These days, it’s hard to imagine Jared Leto without his signature long hair and beard, a look he’s been sporting for the last few years. His career has also never been better. Lil’ Kim Now

Mandy Moore Then
Like fellow singers Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore sported long blonde hair and was famous for singing pop music during the 1990s. But that changed when she was cast in the film “A Walk To Remember” in 2002 and dyed her hair brown.
Mandy Moore Now
For Mandy Moore, dyeing her hair brown for “A Walk To Remember” was a “transformative” experience that seemed to mark her transition from teen pop star to adult actress.
“There was a real significance to coloring my hair. As silly as it sounds, there was a real significance in the way that people saw me, but also in the way that I carried myself and that I saw myself,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Courtney Love Then
In the ’90s, singer and actress Courtney Love perfected the grunge look. Her signature look often consisted of messy hair, smudged makeup and baby doll mini-dresses. Professionally, she split her time performing as the lead singer of the band Hole and acting in movies like “The People vs. Larry Flynt.”
Courtney Love Now
At the 2019 premiere of Hulu’s “Catch-22,” Courtney Love looked less like a grunge queen and more polished than ever. The now-55-year-old singer is also not opposed to plastic surgery, telling People: “Nobody ask me about aging gracefully, pleeease… C’mom, I took advice from Goldie Hawn when she said I should get a facelift at 35!”
