Chopra And Jonas Began Dating In May 2018

Though the two attended the Met Gala together in May 2017 (both were dressed by designer Ralph Lauren), they didn’t officially start dating until a year later. In an interview with Vogue, Jonas and Chopra revealed that they had exchanged text messages for months and even went out for a drink before their gala appearance. But though there was chemistry, they didn’t see much of each other for the following year. It wasn’t until May 2018 that the two were spotted on dates in various cities.

The Couple Got Engaged In July

Jonas and Chopra got engaged on Chopra’s 36th birthday while in London, just two months after they began dating. Jonas reportedly closed down an entire Tiffany & Co. store to pick out the perfect ring — a cushion cut weighing around 4 carats and likely costing around $200,000.

They Held A Mehendi Ceremony In Jodhpur

Jonas and Chopra put their own spin on a Mehendi ceremony, an Indian wedding ritual that typically happens one or two days before the wedding. During the ceremony, the bride and groom’s close friends and family members gather together while the bride gets elaborate henna tattoos on her hands and feet.

Chopra, who wore a bright, colorful dress, shared photos of the occasion on Instagram. “One of the most special things our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures,” she wrote. “And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing. An important part for the girl in an Indian wedding is the Mehendi.”

They Held Another Ceremony, The Sangeet

The Sangeet, a celebration featuring music and dancing and the joining of two families together, took place on Friday, Nov. 30. Chopra shared photos of the event on Instagram, writing, “And what a performance it was.”

Jonas and Chopra exchanged vows in a Western-style ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. As a string quartet played, Chopra’s mother Madhu escorted her down the aisle. Chopra’s father died of cancer in 2013.

A Familiar Face Officiated The Nuptials

The groom’s pastor father, Kevin Jonas Sr. (below, with Nick and wife, Denise) officiated the Christian service for their first ceremony on Dec. 1, although the couple had a traditional Indian ceremony the following day.

“It is super important to Priyanka to have an Indian ceremony that honors her heritage and culture, just as it’s important to also have a Western ceremony that honors Nick’s Christian upbringing,” a source recently told People of the couple’s decision to have two weddings.

Ralph Lauren Designed Chopra’s Dress

Chopra looked stunning in a hand-embroidered floor-length dress designed by Ralph Lauren, as the company confirmed on Twitter on the day of the wedding (before photos were officially released). The gown featured floral and scroll motifs, scalloped sleeves, a high-neck collar and 135 satin-covered buttons that fastened up the front.

The Dress Took Over 1,500 Hours To Make

Chopra’s gorgeous wedding gown practically glowed, thanks to the individually applied mother-of-pearl paillettes, crystal seed beads and Swarovski crystals. The intricate dress reportedly took around 1,826 hours to complete.

Chopra’s dress also included several secret sentimental touches. The bride asked for a piece of her mother-in-law’s lace wedding dress to be sewn into her gown. She also chose names and phrases to be embroidered into the inside of the design: four words (“family,” “hope,” “compassion,” and “love”), her husband’s full name (Nicholas Jerry Jonas), the names of her mother and father (Madhu and Ashok), the Hindi mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” and their wedding date, “1st December 2018.”

Priyanka’s mom, Madhu, is a doctor and producer who — as shown in this Instagram she shared of Priyanka quoting her — raised her daughter to works toward financial independence in life.

Chopra Topped The Look With A Stunning Veil And Jewelry

Chopra finished off her amazing bridal look with an incredible flourish: a 75-foot tulle veil. The veil framed her romantic updo and cascaded behind her as she made her way down the aisle.

She also donned over 29 carats of Chopard jewelry, including drop earrings that featured rose-cut pear-shaped diamonds and another pair of earrings in her veil that featured 12.26-carats of diamonds set in white gold.

Jonas’ Tux Also Featured A Hidden Romantic Touch

Like his bride, Jonas also wore a Ralph Lauren design. The singer sported a double-breasted, six-button black tuxedo and patent-leather dress shoes. He also had a small piece of lace from Chopra’s dress sewn into his lapel with the Urdu words “My Jaan,” meaning “my life.”

She Carried A Bouquet Of Her Favorite Flowers

While walking down the aisle, Chopra carried a bouquet of her favorite flowers, tuberoses. New York’s Jenya Flowers designed and created the floral arrangements for the entire wedding party.

The Wedding Party Also Wore Ralph Lauren

Jonas and Chopra’s entire wedding party, along with both of their mothers, also wore Ralph Lauren designs. The choice is only fitting, given that the designer has played an important role in their relationship. The duo’s first red carpet appearance together occurred at the 2017 Met Gala when they were both dressed by the brand. They weren’t romantically involved at the time, but it helped set the stage for their relationship.

It Was An Emotional Ceremony

According to the celebrity couple, it was hard to tamp down the emotions during the ceremony. “It was all tears. All tears,” Chopra told People. “I could not hold it in. I think I was nervous and scared. But as soon as the curtains opened, and I saw his face it was just like everything settled and I knew I was making the best decision of my life.”

Jonas agreed, telling the magazine, “The emotions were running high during the ceremonies, I think especially during the Western wedding for me. You know, you think your whole life about that moment. Honestly, I could not have imagined it would be as perfect as it was. It was highly emotional.”

The Couple Exchanged Dazzling Wedding Bands

Though many expected Chopra and Jonas to return to Tiffany for their wedding bands, the celebrity couple stuck with Chopard, the same designer behind the rest of the jewelry they wore on their big day. Chopra’s band comes from the Haute Joaillerie Collection and features 3.90-carats of ashoka-cut diamonds with an east/west setting in platinum. Meanwhile, Jonas’ ring is an 18k ethically sourced yellow gold band, which you can catch a glimpse of below.

They Exchanged Vows A Second Time In A Hindu Ceremony

After saying “I do” on Saturday, Dec. 1, Chopra and Jonas returned to the Umaid Bhawan Palace, pictured here, to hold a second traditional Indian wedding. The duo exchanged vows once again in a Hindu ceremony in which the couple and their wedding party wore traditional dress.

For her second bridal look, the actress donned a red lehenga, a customary outfit consisting of a long, embroidered skirt with a matching cropped top and veil. Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi custom-made the look.

Jonas also donned customary clothes for the second ceremony. He wore a silk sherwani with a hand-embroidered chikan dupatta and a chanderi tissue safa. The singer also wore a Syndicate diamond necklace. He completed the look with gold loafers from Christian Louboutin.

It took 110 embroiders from Calcutta, India, to make the lehenga. As People describes, the dress was full of intricate details, including “hand-cut organza flowers, French knot in silk floss and layers of thread work.”

“For the Indian wedding, I wore Sabyasachi,” Chopra told the publication of the look. “I always knew I wanted a red traditional silhouette for my wedding but Sabya brought in incredible French embroidery to the mix and with incredible jewelry and Western-inspired veil it was just such an amalgamation of who I am.”

To complement the lehenga, Chopra wore some stunning jewelry, including a Chopard necklace featuring a 16-carat oval-shaped diamond drop on her head.

Jonas shared a look from the evening with the caption “Happiest day of my life.”

Chopra Incorporated Personal Touches Into Her Second Bridal Look

Just like in the first wedding ceremony, Chopra made sure to include some hidden meaningful touches in her traditional outfit. She requested that Jonas’ name, as well as those of her parents, Ashok and Madhu, be sewn into the waistband of her skirt in her native language.

It Was Important To Chopra To Honor Their Religious Upbringings

The couple paid homage to each of their backgrounds by having both a traditional Western ceremony and a traditional Indian one.

“I love that our wedding was a religious mash-up. We took beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and personalized them in a way that made sense for us,” Chopra told People. “It’s been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way.”

Chopra Donned A Third Bridal Look For The Wedding Reception

On Tuesday night, Dec. 4, the two continued their celebrations with a grand wedding reception at the Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi. Chopra wore a champagne Falguni Shane Peacock lehenga with silver embellishments and flowers in her hair.

For his reception attire, Jonas opted for a blue velvet suit.

The Reception Included An Extensive Guest List

There were reportedly upwards of 1,000 people invited to attend the Taj Palace reception, including several well-known guests. In addition to their celebrity family members, several Bollywood stars joined the couple, as did the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Chopra shared a photo of herself laughing with Modi and Jonas, writing, “A heartfelt thank you to our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji for gracing us with your presence. Touched by your kind words and blessings. @nickjonas.”

The Couple Won’t Be Going On A Honeymoon Right Away

After all the planning and festivities, the couple is due for some private R&R, but they won’t be heading out on a honeymoon right away. In her first video interview since the wedding, Chopra said the two plan to go on a romantic vacation soon — but the date and location will be “a surprise.”
