Netflix Is Releasing A New Movie Every Week This Year — Here’s The List

If you’re missing regular trips to the movies due to pandemic closures and restrictions, streaming giant Netflix is stepping up to the plate. The company has announced that it will release at least one new movie every single week in 2021 — and we’ve got all the details.

Some of the release dates are available now, while others will be announced in due course. A couple of the movies are already streaming, so you can check them out right away. All that’s left is to make your popcorn, turn down the lights and enjoy your own at-home movie theater.

Here’s the full list of brand-new movies coming from Netflix this year.

‘Pieces of a Woman’ (Jan. 7)

After a young woman’s home birth ends in tragedy, she has to figure out how to live with unspeakable loss. Vanessa Kirby takes the lead role, with Shia LaBeouf and Ellen Burstyn playing her husband and her mother. Reviews have been stellar in the first weeks since its release.

“Piercing an intimate, natural tone with almost soapy slivers of melodrama, ‘Pieces of a Woman’ comes close to wringing you out,” wrote The New York Times.

‘Outside the Wire’ (Jan. 15)

Damon Idris plays a drone pilot named Harp in this futuristic survival thriller. He’s sent into a war zone, where he finds himself working for android officer Leo, who’s played by Anthony Makie of “The Avengers.”

Can they find the doomsday device in time? You can find out today since this one is already streaming.

‘The White Tiger’ (Jan. 22)

Written and directed by Ramin Bahrani, based on the 2008 Booker Prize-winning novel by Aravind Adiga, “The White Tiger” charts a young man’s journey from poor Indian villager to successful entrepreneur. Adarsh Gourav plays the main character, Balram, and is joined by Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Can Balram survive and rise above a corrupt system when he finds himself on the verge of losing everything?

‘Penguin Bloom’ (Jan. 27)

“Penguin Bloom” is based on the true story of Sam Bloom, a young mother who is left unable to walk after an accident. Naomi Watts plays Sam, with co-stars Andrew Lincoln as her husband and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver as her mother. But a crucial character is an injured baby magpie, whom the family names Penguin.

The film is based on the memoir written by Sam’s real-life husband. Might want to have the tissues ready for this one!

‘The Dig’ (Jan. 29)

Based on the novel by John Preston, “The Dig” stars Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan as a wealthy widow who enlists the help of an amateur archaeologist, played by fellow Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes, to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. What follows is a reimagining of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo. Mulligan and Fiennes are joined by Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin and Ken Stott in a loaded cast.

‘Finding ‘Ohana’ (Jan. 29)

“Finding ‘Ohana” revolves around two Brooklyn-raised siblings who find a mysterious journal during a summer in rural Ohio. An epic adventure follows, which takes them back to their Hawaiian ancestry. Kea Peahu, Alex Aiono, Lindsay Watson and Owen Vaccaro star in this family film from first-time feature director Jude Weng, who has a long list of credits in TV.

‘Malcolm & Marie’ (Feb. 5)

The new black-and-white character study, “Malcolm & Marie,” stars Emmy winner Zendaya and Golden Globe nominee John David Washington as the title characters. After a successful movie premiere for filmmaker Malcolm, the couple returns home and each one begins to open up about their relationship. Shot over two weeks in a single location during the coronavirus lockdown, “Malcolm & Marie” has attracted a huge amount of hype for its dramatic power.

‘To All The Boys: Always and Forever’ (Feb. 12)

The screenplay of “To All The Boys: Always and Forever” was written by Katie Lovejoy, based on the novel by Jenny Han. The movie sees Lana Condor return as Lara Jean, alongside Noah Centineo and Janel Parrish. It’s the third and final chapter in Netflix’s popular romantic movie franchise, so the big question is: what will happen to Lara Jean and Peter’s relationship?

You can find out on Feb. 12.

‘I Care A Lot’ (Feb. 19)

Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage and Dianne Wiest star in “I Care A Lot,” a drama/thriller about a shady legal guardian who meets her match when she tries to con a woman who has ties to an influential gangster. Directed by J Blakeson, the movie premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival to positive early reviews.

“Pike is astonishingly good, tearing into her role with the same icy menace that made her Oscar-nominated performance in ‘Gone Girl’ so indelible,” wrote The Guardian.

‘Moxie’ (March 3)

Netflix’s upcoming comedy, “Moxie,” directed by Amy Poehler, is based on the novel of the same name by author Jennifer Mathieu. Shy teenager Vivian (Hadley Robinson) has had enough of her high school’s toxic, sexist environment. So she starts an anonymous zine to call out the issues she sees every day and sparks a revolution.

The cast also includes Poehler, Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Marcia Gay Harden.

‘Yes Day’ (March 12)

In real life, Jennifer Garner has been giving her kids a “Yes Day” for years, and she’s now starring in a movie of the same name. The heartwarming family film is actually based on the book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, with Edgar Ramirez, Jenna Ortega and Julian Lerner starring alongside Garner.

The couple in the film decide to stop saying “No” and give their three kids 24 hours of hearing only “Yes” in response to their requests.

‘Things Heard and Seen’ (April 30)

Another book adaptation, this one of Elizabeth Brundage’s acclaimed novel, “All Things Cease to Appear,” is “Things Heard and Seen.” This horror flick stars Amanda Seyfried, recently of Netflix’s acclaimed “Mank,” and James Norton as a Manhattan couple who move to a hamlet in the Hudson Valley. They learn that there’s a darkness at the heart of their marriage, which is echoed in the history of their new home.

‘8 Rue de l’Humanité’

The coronavirus pandemic was the inspiration for this new French film that Netflix is producing. Seven families in a Parisian apartment building don’t manage to escape to the countryside before lockdown and their relationships with their neighbors are put to the test over the three months that follow. Dany Boon directed, co-wrote, co-produced and stars in the movie alongside Francois Damiens, Laurence Arne and Yvan Attal.

In case you wondered, the title translates to a street address.

‘A Boy Called Christmas’

Based on the bestselling children’s book “A Boy Called Christmas” by British writer Matt Haig, this one is sure to be a festive family favorite. Henry Lawfull plays a young boy called Nikolas whose quest to find his father is the central plot. He’s joined by an all-star cast, including Dame Maggie Smith, Jim Broadbent and Kristen Wiig. However, Blitzen the reindeer could steal the show.

Netflix has previously had great success with original Christmas movies, which have included “Klaus” and “A Christmas Prince.”

‘A Castle for Christmas’

Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes star in the festive rom-com “A Castle for Christmas,” which could end up being another seasonal favorite for the streamer. Shields plays American author Sophie, who travels to Scotland and decides to buy a castle. But Myles, the Scottish Duke (Elwes), has his reservations about selling his stately pile to her. Can they find a compromise?

‘Afterlife of the Party’

It’s pretty bad luck to die during your birthday week. That’s exactly what happens to a party girl who’s played by Victoria Justice in this movie, but on the bright side, she’s given a chance to make amends for mistakes she made when she was alive. Stephen Herek, the director of ’90s favorites “The Mighty Ducks” and “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” is behind this one.

‘Against The Ice’

What do you get when the stars of “Peaky Blinders” and “Game of Thrones” meet? “Against the Ice,” a historical survival thriller.

It’s based on the Danish novel “Two Against The Ice” and was adapted for the screen by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister in “Game of Thrones,” and his co-writer, Joe Derrick. Coster-Waldau plays one of the movie’s leads alongside Joe Cole, who famously played John Shelby in “Peaky Blinders.”

‘Army of the Dead’

If you’re into zombie heist movies, mark your calendar for the release of “Army of the Dead,” directed, co-written and co-produced by blockbuster filmmaker Zack Snyder. Set in Las Vegas during an outbreak of the undead, the ensemble cast features Dave Bautista, Tig Notaro, Garret Dillahunt and Hiroyuki Sanada.

“This is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself through a genre,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. “It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware but not in a wink-to-the-camera way, balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose.”

‘Awake’

Not to be confused with the 2019 crime thriller of the same name, “Awake” is a post-apocalyptic adventure starring Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”), Jennifer Jason Leigh and Gil Bellows. Jill (Rodriguez), an ex-soldier with a troubled past, is the only person who can save the world from eternal sleep deprivation. It comes from director Mark Raso, who previously made the 2017 movie “Kodachrome” for Netflix.

‘A Week Away’

The brand-new musical, “A Week Away,” created by Kali Bailey and Alan Powell, showcases original songs as well as popular Christian music. Will Hawkins, played by Kevin Quinn, is a troubled teen who has to decide whether to go to juvenile detention or a Christian summer camp after falling foul of the law. He chooses the camp and finds himself way out of his comfort zone, but romance with a camp regular (Bailee Madison) makes it a little easier.

‘A Winter’s Tale from Shaun the Sheep’

This 30-minute special from Oscar-winning animation studio Aardman, directed by Steve Cox and produced by Giles Pilbrow and Mark Burton, gives the world’s most famous sheep his own festive story. Young viewers will follow Shaun’s quest to find the missing Timmy. The previous two movies in this British franchise were award-nominated favorites of audiences worldwide.

‘Back to the Outback’

Netflix’s animated comedy film, “Back To The Outback,” features an impressive voice cast, including Isla Fisher, Tim Minchin, Eric Bana, Guy Pearce, Keith Urban and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver. Poisonous snake Maddie (Fisher) leads a group of Australia’s deadliest creatures as they plot a daring escape from their zoo to the Outback, where they believe they’ll fit in without being judged for their appearances.

“Growing up in Australia, I spent a lot of time in the Blue Mountains which has many different types of snakes and spiders, and I always preferred them to the cute cuddly animals, so it’s such a treat to make a film where the heroes are these poisonous but beautiful little creatures,” writer-director Harry Cripps told Deadline. “This film is a love letter to Australia’s incredibly diverse and unique wildlife.”

‘Bad Trip’

A hidden-camera comedy from the producers of “Jackass” and “Bad Grandpa,” “Bad Trip” follows two best friends (Eric Andre and Lil Rey Howery) on a cross-country road trip. Along the way, they involve unsuspecting members of the public into their crazy antics.

The film was actually accidentally released on Amazon Prime on April 17, 2020, which was long enough for online thieves to pirate it, but Netflix will officially release this one as an original this year.

‘Beauty’

“Beauty” follows a young woman, played by the incomparable Niecy Nash, living in 1980s New Jersey, who is on the verge of becoming a global singing sensation. But her journey to fame isn’t a straightforward one. Will she listen to her family, her best friend or her label — and who has her best interests at heart? De Armas is best known for her work in 2019’s “Knives Out” but will be poised to break out with this movie and her role in the new James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” this year.

“I have seen the rough cut… and it is startling, brilliant, very disturbing and perhaps most surprisingly an utterly ‘feminist’ interpretation,” wrote Oates on Twitter of Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of her book.

‘Blood Red Sky’

In the German-English film, “Blood Red Sky,” an international flight from Berlin to New York is hijacked by a group of terrorists. Luckily, one of the women on board has supernatural powers she can draw on to defend herself and her son. The cast includes Peri Baumeister, Kais Setti, Alexander Scheer and Dominic Purcell.

‘Bombay Rose’

The stunning “Bombay Rose,” Netflix’s first animated movie from India, is one of the streaming giant’s most visually pleasing releases ever. Featuring the voices of Cyli Khare, Gargi Shitole and Amardeep Jha, it’s a story of love against the odds (in this case duty and religious divides).

Every frame was individually painted and animated, a process that took 60 artists more than 18 months to complete. It debuted in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival but will finally be released worldwide this year by the streaming giant.

‘Bruised’

Halle Berry’s directorial debut received mixed reviews when it premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. But it clearly went down well with Netflix, who bought the streaming rights.
