Grandma To Host Massive Thanksgiving Feast After Winning The Lottery

Thanksgiving is a day to acknowledge and give thanks for the people around us and the things that we have. The important things like home, health, and happiness.

Nowhere is this more apparent this week that in Gastonia, North Carolina, and the home of Vanessa Currence. She just won her state lottery, scoring almost $320,000 dollars. And what is the first thing she plans to do with it? She's planning to be the host for one of the biggest Thanksgiving feasts anyone can ever imagine—her 9 children and 27 grandchildren will all be crowded around the table on Thursday (well, probably crowded around more than one table!).

“This is something to be grateful for,” Currence said on Good Morning America/Yahoo News when she picked up her considerable winnings at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh. “I'm going to treat my family real good. I'm going to rent a place and just have my nine kids and 27 grandkids all together.”

And just how did she come up with the winning combo of numbers required? Every lottery winner probably has a system of some sort, and she did, too. She used a combination of family members' birthdays, and beat the odds of—wait for it—1 in 749,398 to win the Cash 5 jackpot. Her winning ticket, purchased for just $1 at the Gastonia Express Mart, left her with $221,519 after taxes.

“I wasn't expecting to win,” she said in the GMA/Yahoo story. “When my son told me to check my ticket, I just looked at him, and then when I saw the numbers I started jumping around.”

The bottom line in all of this? If you're having dinner at the Currence home this week, you can probably have another slice of pumpkin pie. She won't mind.
