Former Shelter Dog Rescues 3-Year-Old Girl
She's a real-life Lassie!
Dogs are amazing. From reducing our stress to watching out for people who might want to harm us to simply being great snuggle partners, dogs do a lot for us. Peanut, a medium-sized mixed-breed pup in Escanaba, Michigan, is living up to the stellar reputation.
Peanut’s owner was confused when the normally quiet and shy dog wouldn’t stop barking and running up and down the stairs. When her owner let her outside, Peanut ran into an open field behind the house and led her owner to a naked little girl, shivering in the cold.
Peanut’s family was able to warm the girl with blankets and call an ambulance, which then took her to a local hospital for evaluation. The girl’s parents were eventually located, and according to the local Sheriff’s Office, “unsafe and unsanitary living conditions” were found at the home. Child Protective Services removed the girl along with another child from the residence. While it’s certainly a sad situation, who knows what would have become of the girl without Peanut?
Peanut’s family credited the dog’s “sixth sense” for saving the little girl’s life. “Without her, not only would she have been gone from this world, but the life of this little girl might have been taken as well,” Peanut’s owner told CBS.
What makes this story all the more heartwarming is that Peanut comes from a troubled background herself. A year ago, when her family rescued her, Peanut was an abused pup with broken legs and ribs as well as a digestive tract filled with carpet, living in a local shelter.
In a Facebook post, the shelter that was once home to Peanut said, “The good in this heartbreaking story is the heroism of this former abused shelter dog Peanut, and her wonderful adoptive family.”
Let’s hear it for dogs!
