This Firefighter Adopted The Baby He Delivered While On-Call

As a firefighter, you've got to be ready when duty calls. And this South Carolina firefighter definitely stepped up to the plate—and then some—after being called to assist a woman experiencing severe abdominal pain.

“It was a pretty serious call for us," Marc Hadden told Today, about responding to the pregnant woman's call back in 2011. "We got her on some oxygen, started some IVs and literally as we were getting ready to leave the parking lot in the ambulance, my partner said, 'We're about to deliver a baby right here.' We had no time to prepare. Before we could do anything — we hadn't even cut her clothes — Gracie came right out. Immediately she was handed to me."

Of course, she wasn't known as Gracie just yet. At the time, she was just a newborn, but when Hadden learned the little girl was going to be put up for adoption, he had to make her a part of his family.

“He called me and he was ecstatic,” his wife told WMBF News in the 2012 interview below. “I mean, he delivered a baby and who in the world gets to deliver a baby in their lifetime that's not a doctor?”

The Hadden family had been “praying for a third child” and couldn't help but take the little girl as their own. So that's precisely what they did, naming her Rebecca Grace Hadden.

Grace was born November 14, 2011 and the adoption became official in 2012. And now, five years later, she's “part of [their] family, and that is absolutely the way it is.”

Next year, she'll be starting kindergarten, and in the meantime, she'll just be doing what she does best—being apart of this family (along with her two brothers) and sharing an incredible bond with her father. "Gracie and I have an amazing bond," he told Today. "We're tighter than thieves."

Understandably so, he did deliver her, after all.
