Summer may just be getting started, but we’re already looking ahead to fall TV. There are a ton of buzzy new dramas, comedies and even a few animated series to look forward to in the coming season. But with so many options across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms, it can be hard to keep up. Luckily, we’re here to help.
This fall TV preview will help you narrow down which new series you’ll want to tune into. Pick your favorites, and get ready to mark your calendars!
‘The Righteous Gemstones’
HBO’s new comedy, created by and starring Danny McBride, centers on the famous but dysfunctional family of televangelists, the Gemstones. The family has a long, strange history of both greed and charitable work — all of which they say is in the name of Jesus. The show features a star-studded ensemble, including McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Adam Devine and Cassidy Freeman. The show will premiere sometime this August.
‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’
Move over, Ellen — there’s a new talk show host in town. Singer Kelly Clarkson is launching her own one-hour daytime show, in which audiences will get to view live musical performances, games, heartwarming stories and plenty more. You can watch it on NBC, starting on September 9.
‘Tamron Hall’
After abruptly leaving NBC in 2017, Tamron Hall is returning to daytime TV — this time on ABC. The series will reportedly offer a mix of in-depth stories with lifestyle segments, in a similar vein to that of the Oprah Winfrey Show or the Phil Donahue Show. It premieres on September 9.
‘All Rise’
This upcoming courthouse drama charts the chaotic lives of judges, prosecutors and public defenders as they work their way through the flawed legal process. Simone Missick stars as Judge Lola Carmichael, who has just joined the bench after years as a district attorney and is intent on using her new role to push boundaries. The show will premiere on CBS on September 23.
‘Bob Hearts Abishola’
Chuck Lorre, the award-winning creator of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory,” returns to CBS with a new comedy. The series stars Billy Gardell as Bob, a middle-aged sock businessman from Detroit who falls in love with his cardiac nurse, Abishola, while recovering from a heart attack in a hospital. Folake Olowofoyeku plays Abishola, a Nigerian immigrant who seems determined not to let Bob win her over. The series kicks off on September 23.
‘Carol’s Second Act’
Patricia Heaton is returning to TV a year after the end of “The Middle.” In her new comedy, she stars as a 50-year-old woman who decides to start a second career after getting divorced and retiring from teaching. In hopes of finally pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, she gets a medical internship, working with peers who are half her age. Kyle MacLachlan, Ito Aghayere and Ashley Tisdale co-star in the series, which launches on CBS on September 23.
‘Bluff City Law’
Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee star as an estranged father-daughter pair who once worked together as lawyers in an elite Memphis law firm. After the death of her mother, Sydney Strait decides to return to her father’s firm to work on some of their most controversial civil rights cases. Together, they could make a big difference in the world — if they can get along for long enough, that is. You can catch the freshman season of the NBC show starting on September 23.
‘The Unicorn’
The upcoming CBS comedy stars Walton Goggins as the father of two adolescent daughters, a father who is still adjusting to his new reality after losing his wife a year ago. With the encouragement of his kids and his best friends, he begins to take the first step back into the dating world. Watch the first season of the show, starting on September 26.
‘Evil’
Audiences will be able to dive into the origins of evil with this new psychological mystery from CBS. The series follows a female psychologist, a carpenter and a training priest as they examine and try to come up with an explanation for the many mysteries in the history of the Church, including hauntings, miracles and more. Katja Herbers, Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi co-star in the series, which premieres on September 26.
‘Perfect Harmony’
This new NBC comedy stars Bradley Whitford as a former Princeton music producer who comes across a small-town church choir made out of an oddball bunch of singers. With his help, the group may finally find their sound. Anna Camp also co-stars in the show, which kicks off on September 26.
‘Sunnyside’
Kal Penn writes, executive produces and stars in the upcoming NBC comedy “Sunnyside,” which follows a former New York City councilman trying to find his way after a public fall from grace. He reluctantly agrees to take a job helping a diverse group of hopefuls earn their citizenship — only to find a whole new sense of purpose. “Sunnyside” premieres on September 26.
‘The Politician’
Broadway star Ben Platt stars in this upcoming Netflix comedy as Payton Hobart, a wealthy Santa Barbarian with big political aspirations. Each season of the series will revolve around a different political race Payton is involved in. The show marks the first project from Netflix’s partnership with “Glee” and “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton also star. You can stream this show starting on September 27.
‘Stumptown’
Based on the series of graphic novels, this drama stars Cobie Smulders as Dex, a strong and sharp-witted army vet now working as a private investigator to help pay off her gambling debt and care for her brother. Though her military experience makes her a skilled PI, her unorthodox and unapologetic approach also makes her a target for criminals and a nuisance for police.
‘Emergence’
This ABC mystery thriller drama follows Jo Evans, a newly divorced police chief who takes in a young child found near the site of a mysterious accident. The girl has no memory of who she is or what happened, and questions continue to arise as Jo digs deeper into the child’s background. Allison Tolman and Alexa Skye Swinton co-star in the upcoming series.
‘Mixed-ish’
We have “Black-ish,” we have “Grown-ish” and, now, ABC is adding “Mixed-ish” to the, well, mix. The spin-off recounts the story of Rainbow Johnson’s younger years as she grew up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s. After Bow’s parents decide to move their family from a hippie commune to the suburbs, they must all confront the dilemma of assimilating or staying true to themselves. Tracee Ellis Ross serves as the narrator, while Arica Himmel stars as the younger version of Bow.
‘Limetown’
Based on the podcast of the same name, this Facebook Watch series stars Jessica Biel as Lia Haddock, an American Public Radio journalist who launches an investigation into the disappearance of over 300 people at a neuroscience research facility in Tennessee. Stanley Tucci stars opposite Biel, reportedly as Lia’s uncle. The adaptation premieres on October 16.
‘Devs’
FX’s new eight-episode limited series follows a young computer engineer who works for a cutting-edge tech company in San Francisco. She begins to look into the company’s secretive development division after she comes to suspect them of having a hand in her boyfriend’s murder. Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman and Jin Ha star in the series.
‘The L Word: Generation Q’
“The L Word” is back with this new Showtime sequel series. Original characters Bette (Jennifer Beals), Alice (Leisha Hailey) and Shane (Katherine Moennig) will return along with a new set of diverse LGBTQIA+ characters. The show will follow the group as they experience love, heartbreak, success and failure in LA.
‘The Morning Show’
Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are joining forces for “The Morning Show,” which takes an inside look at the unique challenges of the men and women who work on in morning TV. Witherspoon and Aniston will executive produce and star alongside an A-list ensemble, also including Steve Carell, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass. The show, set to premiere sometime this fall, will be one of Apple TV+’s first original projects.
‘For All Mankind’
“For All Mankind” is also set to launch this fall on Apple TV+. The series presents a fictional alternative history, exploring what would have happened if the USSR succeeded in the first manned moon landing and started a different global space race. The cast includes Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman and Sarah Jones, among others.
‘Truth Be Told’
Based on Kathleen Barber’s novel “Are You Sleeping,” this drama from Apple TV+ stars Olivia Spencer as Poppy Parnell, a veteran investigative reporter who launches a new podcast seeking to uncover the truth behind a past questionable murder verdict. Aaron Paul, Elizabeth Perkins, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Beach, Tracie Thoms, Haneefah Wood and Ron Cephas Jones also co-star in the upcoming show.
