While it’s not technically a weight-loss show, “Dancing With the Stars” has helped its celebrity competitors shed major pounds while competing for the show’s coveted mirrorball trophy.
From Kirstie Alley to Sean Spicer, here are some of the many famous faces to have lost weight while dancing on TV.
Actress Kirstie Alley credits her time on the 12th season of “Dancing With the Stars” with helping her lose weight.
“Before ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I bought these dresses from size 14 to 4 … all the same dress, and I said, ‘You know what I really want? I really wanna be in this dress in a 4!'” she told ET.
She reportedly lost 100 pounds.
It only took five episodes during the 28th season of “DWTS” for former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to lose 17 pounds. And he revealed to USA Today that he hoped to lose more.
“Every week, they’re taking in my outfits, especially the pants,” he said. “I can see it in my face. It’s not just a show, it’s a weight-loss program. I’d love to go down another 10 or 15 pounds. If I get to the full goal, maybe we’ll talk. But this is the lowest I have weighed since I got off active (Navy Reserves) duty in 2011.”
TV personality Kelly Osbourne credits her “Dancing With the Stars” dancing partner Louis Van Amstel for teaching her how to eat healthily.
“He made me eat turkey burgers and salads and explained to me that a high-protein, low-carb diet would keep me energized … Then I started losing weight and realized, ‘Oh, it’s true what they say: Diet and exercise really work!'” she told Shape in 2011.
She ended up losing 20 pounds while competing on the show.
“Property Brothers” star Drew Scott lost 30 pounds while competing on “Dancing With the Stars.” In an interview with Fox News in 2017, he said:
“I’m seeing my abs like I’ve never seen them before … I haven’t done cardio like this since I was a teenager.”
Lil’ Kim lived up to her name during season 8 of “Dancing With the Stars.” The rapper reportedly lost 20 pounds before being eliminated in the show’s ninth week.
“I think this is one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever experienced in my life,” she said at the time.
Although she didn’t want to reveal exactly how much weight she lost during season 26 of “Dancing With the Stars,” calling it nobody’s business but her own, figure skater Tonya Harding confirmed that she had slimmed down quite a bit.
“You can tell that I’ve lost a lot,” she told reporters in 2018.
Former NSYNC member and singer Joey Fatone reportedly shed 40 pounds while dancing on season 4 of “Dancing With the Stars.” Fatone later returned to the show for the All-Star season in 2012. However, he and partner Kym Johnson were the second couple to be eliminated.
“Beverly Hills 90210” actress Jennie Garth said she lost 10 pounds during “Dancing With the Stars,” in addition to losing inches and toning her body.
“My jeans were a 29 when I started, and I’m wearing a 27 now,” she explained to Us Weekly in 2007. “It’s great to be able to go to the back of my closet and get the clothes I wore [pre-baby].”
“I’ve lost a lot of inches all over,” former talk show host Ricki Lake told People in 2011 as she rehearsed for “Dancing With the Stars.” “Definitely in my arms, and my arms were particularly one of the things I hated most about my body, so it’s nice to see them slimming down.”
Lake reportedly ended up losing over 20 pounds by the end of her time on “DWTS.”
Thanks to all of the dancing she did while on “DTWS,” actress Jane Seymour lost 20 pounds during her season.
“I was 128 before I started, which was heavy for me,” she said to TV Guide in 2007. “That’s a good seven or eight pounds heavier than I ever like to be. Now I’m 108. And it’s all muscle.”
According to model Amber Rose, who competed on the 23rd season of “DWTS,” people don’t realize just how much work goes into performing on the show, including daily 4- to 5-hour rehearsals. Rose revealed that she lost a good amount of weight.
“I feel like I’m getting super toned… I’ve lost probably, like, 10, maybe 8 pounds already,” she said in 2016 on her podcast.
HLN TV anchor Nancy Grace revealed that performing on “Dancing With the Stars” during the show’s 13th season made her so nervous and exhausted she forgot to eat. This led to her losing 23 pounds.
“It’s incredible,” she said at the time. “I didn’t even try. Frankly, it’s not a good diet. It’s the ‘I’m too tired to eat’ diet, which I don’t advise to anybody.”
Before the 24th season even premiered in 2017, former pro wrestler and actor Mr. T tweeted that he had already lost 12 pounds from the rehearsals alone!
“This Dancing is really making Me Sweat off the Lbs,” he wrote on Twitter. “I’ve already lost 12! I am Lean, Mean and 219. I am Agile, Mobile and Hostile. Grrr!”
Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown reportedly signed up to compete on the fifth season of “Dancing With the Stars” just weeks after giving birth to her third child, and she credits the reality show with helping her shed her baby weight.
“Before I did ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I had a lot of weight — a lot of baby weight to lose, so that really helped — dancing, for sure,” she revealed in a 2010 interview.
Actress Lisa Rinna claims she got into “fantastic shape” while competing every week on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2006. (It must have been all of the rumba-ing and jiving.) She and dance partner Louis Van Amstel finished in fourth place during the show’s second season.
Although she didn’t lose any weight during her first “Dancing With the Stars” season, TV personality Bristol Palin said her legs were much more toned from competing on the show. Palin returned to the season 15 all-star cast showing off a much slimmer body.
“I’m definitely in better shape than I was last time,” she told US Weekly in 2012.
Prior to joining season 11 of “Dancing With the Stars,” comedian Margaret Cho claimed she had never worked out. But once she started sweating regularly, it completely changed her outlook on exercising.
“Now that I’ve been moving, I realize how good it feels,” she told People, adding that she had lost a “lot” of weight.
Chaz Bono, the son of the late Sonny Bono and singer Cher, rapidly lost weight as a contestant during season 13 of “Dancing With the Stars.” According to his dance partner Lacey Schwimmer, Bono lost 5 pounds in the first six days of rehearsals. However, that didn’t stop judge Bruno Tonioli from not-so-subtly criticizing Bono’s weight.
Actress Tia Carrere reportedly joined the second season of “Dancing With the Stars” after having a baby a few months before. She became one of the first celebrities that viewers noticed visibly slimming down during the show. However, Carrere and dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were eliminated in week five.
On season 12 of “Dancing With the Stars,” reality star Kendra Wilkinson made it through seven weeks of the fierce dancing competition. Along the way, she also lost weight and told reporters that, before the show, she was a “size 2 or 4” and, afterward, she was a size 0.
Singer Marie Osmond joked in 2007 that “Dancing With the Stars” should actually be called “Dancing With the Starved” because of how much weight you can lose while appearing on it. Osmond reportedly lost 31 pounds during her season 5 appearance.
Meteorologist Ginger Zee credited “Dancing With the Stars” for transforming her body in 2016. She reportedly started training just two months after having a C-section, and while she only lost a few pounds, Zee says her clothes fit better by the end of the season.
She may not have won “Dancing With the Stars,” but soul singer Gladys Knight still achieved a lot during her time on the show’s fourteenth season. She reportedly dropped 60 pounds in less than two months — and at the age of 67!
During her eight weeks on season 14 of “Dancing With the Stars,” Melissa Gilbert, the child actress who starred on the TV show “Little House on the Prairie,” reportedly lost a significant amount of weight. While she didn’t reveal the exact number, Gilbert told US Weekly that she dropped from a size 6 to a size 2. She also said that her waist was down to just 26 inches.
Early on during season 25 of “Dancing With the Stars,” wrestler and reality star Nikki Bella told reporters that she had already lost 5 pounds from dancing on the show and that she hoped to lose more.
“I’m like, ‘I need to keep this off!’ I kinda wanna lose five more but actually keep the butt really big,” she said to E! News.
Not only did singer Mýa place second during the ninth season of “Dancing With the Stars,” but she also reportedly lost 11 pounds during the show’s first four weeks due to the intensive amount of dancing. Mýa told E! News that she didn’t have to diet very much either.
“I’m so happy because I can eat more of what I want to eat because I’m burning it off,” she said. “I love carbs! I’m a sucker for carbs.”
After gaining 70 pounds due to polycystic ovary syndrome, “Pretty Little Liars” star Sasha Pieterse found “DWTS” had a positive effect on her health and weight. The actress reportedly lost 37 pounds while competing on the 25th season of the show.
“I’m feeling like me again,” she told TV viewers.
Disney star Kyle Massey, who’s best known for his roles on “That’s So Raven” and “Cory in the House,” reportedly dropped 18 pounds and 8 inches off of his waist while competing on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2010.
“It’s crazy to think you’re going to come into a competition like this and not lose weight with the hours you’re going to have to put in,” he told People at the time.
“I can sit in a booth in a restaurant now,” Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who reportedly lost 40 pounds on “Dancing With the Stars,” told OK! in 2009. “I used to be skinny, so [DWTS] is getting me back into exercise and when you exercise, you don’t eat as much, either, because you just don’t want as much food. Everything is balancing and going in a good direction.”
Thanks to all of the dancing he did on season 4 of “Dancing With the Stars,” former “Beverly Hills 90210” star Ian Ziering reportedly dropped 20 pounds. Ziering later followed up his performance on “DWTS” with a stint dancing with the Chippendales in Las Vegas in 2013. He said he was motivated to dance again after TMZ reportedly called him “fat.”
