Take it from me, being a left-hander in a right-hander’s world is tough. It’s the little things, like spiral-bound notebooks, scissors not working properly and not being able to write on a dry-erase board without smearing everything, that make it a burden. But we are also a proud club of misfits.
Lefties make up only about 10 percent of the world’s population, but there are some awesome celebrities among that group. Check out our list of some stars you might not have realized were southpaws.
Like many lefties growing up, pop idol Justin Bieber had to initially adapt to using right-handed tools. He said his mom had a right-handed guitar in the house and he used to play it left-handed. She eventually bought him his own left-handed guitar for his birthday.
Despite being second in line to the throne, Prince William is very much the odd man out in his family when it comes to dominant hands. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Prince Harry and his own wife, Kate Middleton, are all right-handed, while Prince William writes with his left hand. But he’s in good company because Queen Victoria was believed to be a lefty as well.
One of the richest men in the world is a lefty. In fact, not only is Microsoft founder Bill Gates a lefty, so was the late Apple founder Steve Jobs. When asked about that link by “60 Minutes” in 2013, Gates was expectedly analytical in his answer.
“There’s a little bit higher variance of talent, high and low, for left-handers but it’s something that’s never been explained,” he said.
You know Jerry Seinfeld from his iconic sitcom and decades spent as a leading stand-up comedian, but did you know he’s left-handed?
In his 2017 Netflix special “Jerry Before Seinfeld,” he revealed that the first joke he ever wrote was about being a lefty and the negative phrases that go along with it.
“Left feet. Left-handed compliment. ‘What are we having for dinner?’ ‘Leftovers,’” he said. “Why are they putting that on us?” (In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, he later clarified that he is ambidextrous — that is, he can use both hands dominantly.)
Do you underestimate lefties as nothing but a bunch of weirdos who favor the “wrong” hand? In the words of left-hander Julia Roberts (or, really, one of her most famous characters Vivian from “Pretty Woman”), “Big mistake. Big. Huge!” She’s one of the most iconic actors of all-time and she signs her autographs with her left hand.
If you’ve ever seen a movie in which Bruce Willis fired a gun (OK, that’s pretty much all of them … ), you might have noticed he holds them in his left hand. The “Die Hard” star and box office icon is a lefty. Perhaps lefties are drawn together because Willis’ ex-wife, Demi Moore, is also a lefty.
Whether you know Rashida Jones for her starring roles in “Parks and Recreation” or “Angie Tribeca,” did you know she’s a lefty? The daughter of music producer Quincy Jones and actor Peggy Lipton, Jones first became a mainstream star in her short, but memorable, run in “The Office.”
As if you needed another reason to like Goldie Hawn, now you know she’s a southpaw. She’s been charming audiences since the 1960s and most recently appeared in “Snatched” with Amy Schumer.
Just like her aforementioned famous mom Goldie Hawn, actor Kate Hudson is also a lefty. So, is left-handedness something that can be passed down from your parents? Scientists say it’s complex and that the hand you prefer to use is decided by many factors.
When Hugh Jackman is ripping someone to shreds as Wolverine in the X-Men movies, his left claw might be slightly more painful. That’s because this Australian star is left-handed.
You’ve probably heard that toilets flush backward in Australia — but I’m starting a new rumor that the best Aussie movie stars are always left-handed. In addition to Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman also happens to favor her left. She’s such a great actor that when she played right-handed writer Virginia Woolf in 2002’s “The Hours,” she actually learned to write with her right hand to make her performance more authentic.
Angelina Jolie also happens to be a lefty. In fact, the star reportedly needed a left-handed gun created for her role in “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.”
Research has shown that left-handers tend to be more creative than righties and, if Paul McCartney is any evidence, they may also be better songwriters. When the former Beatle put pen to paper and wrote “Hey Jude,” he did so with his left hand. However, lefties also tend to be more forgetful, so hopefully none of those great lyrics slip his mind.
It’s been shown that in one-on-one sports, lefties have the edge — but LeBron James is proof that they can dominate you in team sports as well. James will sign a basketball for you with his left hand but he actually learned to shoot hoops with his right hand when he was growing up. He said that’s because the players he looked up to were all righties.
Even big fans of Lady Gaga might be surprised to know that she’s a lefty. That’s because when she plays guitar she does it right-handed. But if she signs an autograph, or sits down to write another pop anthem, she’s doing so with a pen in her left hand.
When entertainment titan Oprah Winfrey is signing checks — you know, from her stack of cash — she’s using her left hand. After a rousing speech at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, many speculated that she was eyeing a run for president. She’s denied any political aspirations but if Winfrey did become president, she’d be the ninth left-hander in the Oval Office.
While being left-handed made a person ripe for derision in the old days, Scarlett Johansson is further proof that left is beautiful. After all, the “Avengers” star has been named Esquire magazine’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” multiple times. Oh, and she’s also the highest-paid female actor in Hollywood — probably because she’s a lefty.
Another ridiculously good-looking — and highly paid — lefty is Mark Wahlberg. Like fellow southpaw Scarlett Johansson, the “Ted” star was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood in 2017. When Wahlberg starred in the movie “Shooter,” he learned how to fire a gun right-handed because most military snipers are righties.
Fans of Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in “The Hunger Games” films might think she’s right-handed if they know anything about archery — but she’s a proud lefty. When playing Katniss Everdeen, the Oscar-winning star shot her bow and arrow right-handed, meaning she pulled back the bowstring with her right hand. However, archery experts say it’s easy to learn to shoot a bow with your non-dominant hand and that an archer’s bow orientation has more to do with her dominant eye.
Another “Saturday Night Live” favorite who happens to be a lefty is Jason Sudeikis. When he co-starred with Ed Harris in “Kodachrome” this year, Harris bought him a left-hander’s baseball mitt so they could play catch together. Although the actor has been engaged to fellow star Olivia Wilde for several years, he doesn’t yet sport a wedding ring on his dominant hand.
Comedy icon Will Ferrell is a bit of an oddball when it comes to being a lefty. If you look up video of him signing an autograph, you’ll notice he writes with his left hand — but if you look at video of him throwing a baseball, you’ll notice he throws with his right hand. Ambidextrous, perhaps? Of course, calling the man who brought us Ron Burgundy an oddball is probably redundant.
Another hilarious left-hander is Tim Allen. It’s unclear from watching “Toy Story” whether or not Buzz Lightyear is a lefty but at least we know the guy who does his voice is. However, research has shown that lefties tend to be more inhibited and easily embarrassed than righties, which doesn’t sound at all like Allen’s classic character Tim Taylor from “Home Improvement.”
Another left-hander you just can’t help but love is Kathryn Hahn. She’s hilarious in pretty much everything, from movies like “Bad Moms” to a series of Chrysler minivan commercials.
You obviously know Morgan Freeman has one of the greatest speaking voices of all time, but did you know he’s also a southpaw? Sadly, the actor lost the use of his dominant hand after a car crash in 2008 that has forced him to wear a compression glove on it ever since. But he still enjoys playing golf, which he’s said he now does by only swinging his right arm.
Not only can “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Terry Crews make his pecs dance, he’s also a lefty. The actor said that he was into painting, drawing and other creative pursuits growing up, which he attributes to his left-handedness.
Here’s one left-hander you seriously don’t want to mess with. UFC and WWE champion Ronda Rousey is actually a lefty, despite fighting orthodox (right-handed) style in the ring. In 2014, she needed nine stitches in her right hand after she punched another fighter so hard it burst a cyst under her knuckle! “But I’m left-handed so it’s all good,” she told reporters.
When rapper 50 Cent was writing the lyrics to “In Da Club,” he had the pen in his left hand. That song was all about celebrating and drinking, the latter of which is something studies have tried to show lefties tend to do more than righties. Although when 50 Cent threw out an awful first pitch at a New York Mets game in 2014, people did start to wonder if he actually is left-handed.
It’s hard not to like Anna Kendrick. And if you’re a lefty, you have yet another reason to be a fan of the charming star of “Pitch Perfect,” because she is also a southpaw.
