This Mom Lost 100 Pounds In One Year And Even Entered A Bikini Competition

A day at the beach in 2012 set Christine Carlos on the path to a new life. Then 32, the mom weighed 225 pounds and struggled to keep up with her 8-year-old daughter.

“I was devastated because I wasn’t able to really play with Ysabella the way she wanted me to,” Carlos recalled to Muscle and Fitness. “I was out of breath, unfit, and uncomfortable.”

So she decided to make a change. She started out slowly by making small tweaks to her diet. Cutting out fried and fast food, she began consuming more vegetables and only a minimal amount of carbs. She lost 50 pounds in the first five months.

Carlos told POPSUGAR that a typical day of eating for her would consist of oatmeal and eggs for breakfast, salad with homemade vinaigrette for lunch and fish and vegetables for dinner.

(Swipe left) These two pictures and a couple more during my family vacation back in 2012 were my biggest wake up call. Especially the ones where I was in my swimsuit tanning🙈. I gained tons of weight during my late teenage years. I guess due to depression from moving away from the country I grew up in. I found comfort in food, became lethargic and really shy. From then on, I tried losing weight a few times which made my weight fluctuate up and down. I had my child in 2007 and I got even more bigger. I realized in 2012 during that summer that I can’t live my life just dreaming and watching people live their life to the fullest. I can’t sit around and not be active with my little one. And I can’t risk having health issues. I wanted more out of life. I wanted to feel alive for my child and I want to set a good example for her. That’s my back story Since then I lost 100 lbs and kept it off. Right now I’m 15 lbs above my usual stage weight and that’s okay because competing isn’t in my plans at the moment. I have good and bad days just like everyone else. What matters is that even if I feel like I’m failing at some point, I keep going and I try my best everyday. My goal right now is to be stronger and build the best body I could achieve in the healthiest way possible without going to extremes. A fitness journey doesn’t have a finish line. You’re also never too old to start Before I get asked again. I didn’t have any type or surgery to lose weight and I didn’t have any type of skin surgery either. In addition to changing her diet, the mom also began working out. She started with walking on her treadmill at home for 45 minutes a day for six days a week, and then progressed to jogging. She also incorporated Tabata workouts into her fitness plan.

One year later, Carlos had lost 100 pounds, but she decided she wasn’t going to stop there. In July 2013, she began training for a bikini competition, and the weight-lifting workouts she began to do leading up to competition helped her shed even more unwanted weight.

“I was nervous getting up onstage, but having my daughter there gave me strength. Win or lose, I felt I had achieved something,” she said.

This is more of a reverse type of transformation. For those of you that don’t know my back story. I was obese for most of my adult life. About 5 years ago I started my weight loss journey. Lost 100 lbs and went into body building competitions in the bikini category. . . The left photo was me during my last prep. Which was a couple years ago. And the right photo is my current physique. I have been off of prep for two years now. So obviously I don’t have the need to really restrict myself as much. (I’m surprised that my bikini still fits even if it’s a little snug 😂). This is just me trying to maintain a more sustainable and balanced lifestyle. Obviously not trying to go to the extremes. Listening to what my body needs nutritionally and also getting enough rest from the gym when I need to. After two years of doing bikini competitions, Carlos has since relaxed her diet. Now she focuses on eating “lots of proteins, green vegetables, complex carbs, and healthy fats,” she told POPSUGAR. She doesn’t deprive herself and even has the occasional cheat meal!

She’s gained 15 pounds back, but is still happy with her body and the progress that she’s made. Her advice to others hoping to lose weight is simple.

“Take it day by day,” she told POPSUGAR. “Don’t think about the long-term and just focus on what you need to do at the moment, because if you focus on how you want to look, you’ll easily get discouraged.”
